ORDEAL (Operational Resilience of Drones in Experiments and Autonomous Flight) is a European Defence Fund (EDF) 2024 selected project focused on strengthening the operational resilience of drones in experiments and autonomous flight. The project delivers a real-world challenge environment to test robust positioning and navigation in non-permissive conditions.
The ORDEAL challenge consists of four test campaigns conducted in diverse environments and under demanding factors, including harsh seasonal conditions, counter-drone measures and jamming of positioning signals. Participants will demonstrate accurate positioning for single and swarm drones, reflecting realistic operational scenarios.
Evaluation will consider position estimation accuracy, time to complete the test field, and the number of drones in the swarm that reach the goal. The outcome is a validated test environment and evidence-based insights that support the development of robust autonomous drone navigation solutions.
